Onyx: Christmas Cat

see kitty go for a visit
on his first Christmas
and stay with his new grandma
who hasn't had a kitten
in a very long time
see kitty survive
his first long car ride
see kitty
explore every inch
of the kitchen and family room
which is where "grandma" insists he stays
see kitty entertain
with his "great hunter" instincts
by killing his toy mouse
over and over again
see kitty
leap on the mouse
and push the mouse
and throw the mouse
see kitty
try to crawl
under the stove
to try and retrieve his mouse
see the humans
try to help
and stop watching kitty
just for a moment
see kitty
take this chance
to escape
see kitty
discover a new world
in the living room
a world
complete with a tree
see kitty try to climb the tree
trying to reach
the round shiny things
that look so enticing
see kitty
try to walk
to the end of a branch
plop
and fall to the ground
along with the shiny round thing
see kitty
discover a much better prey
than his old mouse
bat
chase

CRASH
bad, bad kitty
That was the first of many ornaments that met their demise at the paws of the great hunter. He'd bat them against the wall as hard as he could so they'd shatter. My Mom wasn't overly thrilled and politely informed me during the years to come that "that unruly cat" needed to learn some manners. He was confined to my bedroom during subsequent visits.
