and turn sideways
and arch his back
see every bit of fur
standing straight up
hisssss . . .
grrrr . . .
see samson sit
and glance at the mouse-sized
creature trying to be ferocious
see samson look up at jill
waiting patiently for his dinner
see kitty
rigid
attempting to growl
and hiss
but sounding more like the static
at the end of a tape
or a mouse clearing its throat
and just about as loud
see samson
decide that dinner is not forthcoming
and decide to go down to the basement
see samson
walk right by kitty
who keeps his back arched
and bounces sideways
to make room for
the monster
that can't really be ignoring him
several days later
see susan

see susan
surprised to find kitty
asleep on top of samson
in the living room
best of friends
When Onyx was about 12 weeks old, I needed to go out of town for a few
days. I arranged for a couple friends to take care of Onyx. They had a
3-year-old male monster appropriately named Samson who didn't mind other
cats.
It took the entire first night but once Onyx decided he wasn't going to
be a
snack, he followed Samson, a huge dark grey cat, everywhere. When Samson
would go outside on his tether--they lived by a busy road--Onyx would
sit at the door and watch for him waiting till he cam inside. At first
Samson paid no attention to him, but then started playing, and giving
him baths. The initial vision, though, of this tiny little ball of fluff
trying to look viscious in the face of a cat who could merely open his
mouth and inhale him is one I'll never forget.
