Diet

Always have Royal Canin dry cat food and WATER available to your kitten

The Diet tips below are for cats and kittens that are in need of extra nutrition.

Mix equal parts of -
- Beechnut baby food - lamb or veal
- Gerbers rice cereal
- 1/4 cup KMR (Kitten Milk Replacer) or Evaporated Milk
  (mixed half and half with water)
  Give twice a day
OR
Hill's Prescription Diet, Canine a/d Feline - 1/2 of a 5.5 oz can, twice a day.
OR
Give 1-2 tbs twice a day of one choice
- Cottage Cheese
- Ricotta Cheese
- Chicken Broth
- Chicken - Cooked, diced, no skin or fat
- Ground Turkey - Cooked
Always remember to feed small amounts of food frequently.

Bathing

Before
- Brush out completely
- Trim Nails
- Clean Face - Use Gauze or a Cosmetic Sponge
- Clean Ears - Use Baby Oil and Q-Tips
During
- Be Gentle, But Firm
- Keep one hand on the cat at all times, at the scruff of the neck
- Use lukewarm water
- Completely wet the cat, head to toe, then turn off the water
- Dilute shampoo 1/2 and 1/2 with warm water
  (this will increase the sudsing effect)
- For Oily Hair - Use Dawn Dishwashing Detergent
- For Dry Hair - Use Baby Shampoo or Mane and Tail
- Follow manufacturers directions for duration of sudsing
- Completely Rinse out your cat
- For an extra clean fluffy coat - Rinse with a solution of 1/2 cup of Vinegar in a gallon of lukewarm water
  Rinse again for several more minutes
After
- Completely Comb out, Using a Stainless Steel Cat Comb
  (this will help prevent knots from forming during the drying process)
- Blow Dry, Using the Lowest Heat Setting
- Comb as you Dry
- Completely Dry, This could take anywhere from 1/2 an hour to 1 1/2 hours.
  You should end up with a beautiful fluffy cat.

We have had numerous inquires as to what to do if a long-haired cat becomes matted to the skin. It is best to turn to a professional groomer, as shaving or clipping a long-haired cat requires much patience and expert grooming abilities.

Vaccinations

My kittens receive 3 sets of shots, each set 4 weeks apart. My adults, that are currently showing, usually get their innoculations every 6 months, as they are exposed to other cats at the shows. My stay at home adults receive innoculations once a year. I have a policy regarding adult females, they receive their innoculations when their babies are 3 to 4 weeks old. I established this policy many years ago, as giving a nursing mom an innoculation will prove beneficial to her kittens, as the immunities that are passed on to them via the milk will be stronger, therefore when their kittens received their first innoculation, they are less likely to have a reaction to the vaccine. Secondly, giving vaccine to a pregnant female is risky, so innoculating a nursing mom is another safeguard in that you know for sure, she is not pregnant
